Algonquin Party Held for Dorothy Parker Mink Coat

Several of the backers of the Kickstarter crowd funding campaign to purchase one of Dorothy Parker’s mink coats came together last weekend for a party at the Algonquin Round Table. These were the folks who pledged enough money to actually wear Mrs. Parker’s mink; model Dandy Dillinger was the first.

It was an early morning crowd. A little too early. We met at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, much to our chagrin the bar didn’t open until noon, due to the city blue laws. The group had to wait until the appointed time to finally be served mimosas and Bloody Mary’s.

The actual trying on of the coat was a lot of fun. Everyone was extra careful for their photoshoot and selfie taking. A couple of the hotel guests got in on the fun. And the staff too.

The plan for the mink was previously explained. Now that the mink is back in New York, it will go into cold storage in a fur vault. In the fall it will be brought out to the public again for fundraising. At the party we came up with a short list of the types of organizations we want to support, and that are in the spirit of Mrs. Parker.

The mink was the star of the party, but really, it was the people present that made it happen. Thanks to them, the coat is back in Manhattan, where many, many more Dorothy Parker fans can see it. We may not ever be able to meet Mrs. Parker, but we can now meet her coat.
