    Six Degrees of Star Wars

Today Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is filling movie theaters. Here is the Star Wars connection to Dorothy Parker. Are your ready? You will only read this here: Bebe Neuwirth plays Dottie in Dash and Lilly on A&E. She of course was Lillith on Cheers. Also on that show was John Ratzenberger (Postman Cliff) who appeared in The Empire Strikes Back as rebel pilot Major Derlin. This makes the connection between Star Wars and Mrs. Parker just two degrees!

    Marshall University Web Site

Maybe it is the end of the school year and teachers are finally telling their students that Dorothy Parker is a worthy term paper subject, but traffic here is way up. A new site we were tipped off by from Maria at Marshall University has a general Parker biography, timeline, era and influence, and literary analysis. Check it out, also see a nice original illustration of Parker. Whenever a student wants help on a paper, I try to help. The more Dottie fans the better!

    Dashing for the Bus

If you live in New York City, you can ride around in a bus with the images of Dashiell Hammett (Sam Shepard) and Lillian Hellman (Judy Davis).

The A&E Web site has a section devoted to Dash and Lilly, with a lot of photos and background material. There is only one photo of Bebe Neuwirth as Mrs. Parker on it. A few video clips are cool to see.

Out Now: The Sayings of Dorothy Parker

Special thanks to hip London gal Cyndi for scoring me a copy of the U.K. edition of The Sayings of Dorothy Parker, a slim tome that was tied to Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle. Jennifer Jason Leigh is on the cover of this 64-page paperback, only available in the U.K. The Sayings of Dorothy Parker basically offers nothing new to the diehard Parker fan, but does expose her wit and brilliance to new readers.

It is published by Duckworth, ISBN 0-7156-2677-9 if you can find it. Can also be

Dash and Lilly Coming to TV

We have been buzzing about it for months, and A&E is finally talking about Dash and Lilly, first reported in January. Live in New York? There is a billboard on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway with the two stars. Of course, Bebe Neuwirth plays Dorothy Parker, but she isn't on the billboard, which is a drag. It would be awesome to have the visage of Dottie glaring down on drivers as they inched their way to LaGuardia and JFK airports.

It will air May 31 at 7 and 10 p.m. (Send me reviews). Here is what A&E PR says: Dash and Lilly. Movie. The passionate affair of literary titans Dashiell Hammett (Sam Shepard) and Lillian Hellman (Judy Davis)--the hard-drinking, chain-smoking duo who rode a 30-year emotional roller-coaster, cheating on each other, fighting McCarthyism, and working on Broadway and in Hollywood. With Bebe Neuwirth. Kathy Bates directs. (1999) (cc) [TV PG].
